ENVIRONMENTAL DUE DILIGENCE

Environmental Due Diligence (EDD) is an increasingly important part of the corporate due diligence process. Environmental liabilities can be large and hidden, often relating to sub-surface pollution or impending permitting requirements. If left unresolved they can be extremely costly and have a significant impact on your transaction, as well as leading to potential negative impacts on public perception. IBIS identifies the material risks and mitigation measures thus maximising the value of the transaction and minimising the potential exposure.

Specific services include the following:

  • Data room reviews;
  • Environmental sensitivity analysis and conceptual site model development;
  • Facility visits and management interviews;
  • Issue identification and corrective action;
  • Analysis and cost estimation of environmental liabilities; and
  • ASTM E1527 Environmental Site Assessments (using information available in Africa).

CONTAMINATED LAND INVESTIGATION AND REMEDIATION

In many African countries, the onus is on land owners and their advisers (legal and financial) to understand their current and historic activities and how these may be seen in the context of impacts on the environment. The assessment and management of contamination issues is also a critical aspect of corporate social responsibility, ensuring the protection of public water resources and maintaining a safe working and living environment. At IBIS we recognise that the scale and scope of any assessment needs to be fit-for-purpose and focused on deriving the appropriate outcome that aligns with regulatory requirements and your company’s objectives.

IBIS services include:

  • Development of conceptual site models to assist in identifying potential
environmental risks
  • Quantifying environmental risks by completing focussed soil, groundwater,
vapour sampling strategies and risk assessments
  • Mitigating risks by:
    • Analysing remedial alternatives
    • Developing remedial strategies
    • Implementing and managing remediation systems
    • Obtaining regulatory agreement
  • Engaging with regulators to steward the regulatory processes on your behalf

PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT

Challenging market conditions have prompted businesses to focus on improving operational performance and efficiency, resulting in portfolio rationalisation and, at times, the unbundling of underperforming assets. These are traditionally older, legacy sites with potential historic issues that if left unresolved can interrupt the process.

IBIS provides technical expertise in support of project managers through the following services:

  • Offering proven strategies to help managers prioritise the evaluation of sites in their portfolios
  • Providing innovative rapid screening techniques and consistent risk-based ranking methods
  • Assisting clients to proactively drive projects to closure
  • Deriving efficiencies and cost-saving benefits across multi-site programmes
  • Providing an integrated, holistic understanding of the liabilities associated with contamination to support and advise clients for financial reporting purposes

TECHNICAL PEER REVIEWS AND STRATEGIC ADVICE

Anomalous data or information can steer your project towards inappropriate conclusions and actions with costly consequences.
Positive interventions in the early stages of a project, or at strategic milestones, will provide confidence that you are on the right path for a successful project outcome.
We provide strategic advice to leadership on their sustainability agenda, ensuring projects are aligned with corporate strategy.

IBIS services include:

  • Independent Peer Reviews of third-party service providers’ outputs
  • Evaluation of the project strategy in terms of scope alignment with your end-state vision
  • Independent evaluation of proposals, site assessment reports, ESIAs, intervention alternatives and designs
  • On-site reviews and monitoring of work-in-progress
